It’s the weekend!!!! Woo! Too bad I have a ton to do this weekend! Oh well! It’ll all get done!
Today I was in desperate need of going to the grocery store. Luckily, I was provided with lunch on campus today (delish veggie pizza and salad!) because I literally had no fresh produce, which is a deal breaker for me.
So I went to the grocery store and spent tons of $$. I’ve realized I buy expensive things. I go through about 1 large container of greek yogurt per week which costs about $7.99. About 2 bags of spinach and 1 bag of romaine hearts and then I usually choose a few “exciting splurges.” For me, exciting splurges are fruits of vegetables that aren’t cheap (usually over $3/lb).
Last week’s exciting splurge was a cantaloupe. This week’s exciting splurge is a bag of colorful pepper and some mushrooms!
Do you splurge on expensive produce? Do you consider it a splurge even since it’s healthy?
So delicious! I had some dinner!
Broccoli and Yellow Pepper Stir Fry
Along with a can of soup since it was a cold day (we had a high of 45degrees! Yesterday the high was 80 degrees! What’s up with the weather??)
I also baked the most disappointing muffins ever tonight.
Bob’s Red Mill… you let me down. I made these: Ruthie’s 8 Grain Muffins
Omm… why were they salty? Not expected. They would probably taste good with chili but I was expecting something sweet. I’m a little disappointed…
Hitting ‘Publish’ Jamie Oliver’s Food Revolution just started! Are you watching?
I don’t consider fruits & veggies a splurge (unless it’s some exotic fruit from the depths of Indonesia or something like that 🙂 )
One thing that IS a splurge though are organic bell peppers. Idk about you but they’re $3 each over here!! And they’re not from the U.S
I for sure consider expensive health foods a splurge. But its a splurge that I dont feel guilty about 🙂 Food gives me so enjoyment and its important for a number of reasons to buy as much organic as you can…. as you can see I justify it quite easily 😉
No produce = deal breaker for me, too. I’ve realized that produce makes up well over half of my overal grocery store trip. Sure, yogurt, bread, misc of knick-knacks, but we have tons of canned beans & stuff like that “in stock” at home. Sometimes I’ll think “wow…I just spent THAT much, and I hardly got any FOOD.” Oh well.
I kind of look at my splurges as a “splurge,” but I don’t get buyers remorse like I do for clothing, haha. I’m weird.
Bummer about the muffins!! Seems like they’d be good, too – 8 grain goodness 🙂
I always splurge, especially if I have something specific in mind. I think that GOOD ingredients are ALWAYS worth it!
I definitely think it’s a “splurge” in terms of spending money but always worth it. Especially when you see a fancy new fruit or veg that you HAVE to try. 😀
Sorry to hear about the muffins! I hate it when that happens.
I think I spend a ton of money on food but that’s ok because it’s what I want to eat. 🙂
If I have to spend a lot of good food I tend not to mind. However, we have this fresh produce stand around here that just opened again and I couldn’t believe how CHEAP everything was! I came home after my first trip and told my husband I felt like a kid in the candy store. They had 3 quarts of strawberries for 5 dollars… a huge bunch of spinich for 1 dollar 🙂 grapes 1 dollar a pound… apple a dollar a pound! it was amazing! This place is only a little over 1 hour from Ithaca and there’s also a great bulk food store w/ whole grains and stuff in it. You should maybe make a trip down sometime 🙂
You know me, Karla, I spend WAY too much at the grocery store. I buy the most expensive products, but only because they are also the ones with the least and/or best ingredients. I feel it’s worth it, though. 🙂 It’s funny, when I give the store card, nothing EVER comes off because they don’t put “healthier” items on sale. It sucks! 😦

That’s soo true! And such a shame! I always love seeing your loot from the grocery store! Makes me smile!
I splurge on produce all the time! I’m good about curbing my impulse shopping, but challenge myself to mix it up and try new things in the produce department since going heavy raw. I don’t feel bad about it since I’m pretty thrifty in other areas and like the variety.
I’ve been recording, but not watching much Food Revolution – too many good shows and not enough time! 😦
