Food in the City

Today, the lovely fella and I met my friend Emily in San Francisco (aka The City… I understand that on the East Coast “The City” means NYC but here it means SF).  We met at the Ferry Building because I’ve been wanting to go to the Farmer’s Market there for a long long time.

Upon arriving, we were all starving so we had lunch in the Ferry Building.  We stopped at a sandwich shop called Lulu Petite.

I got a delicious eggplant sandwich.  Ooooh soooo good!  Words can’t even describe how good this was!

Emily almost couldn’t wait!

Then we walked around the Farmer’s Market for a bit, where I bought a persimmon!

I love persimmons.  They’re so expensive in Ithaca ($2 each!  Can you believe that!!?!?!)  Here I got 4 for $2.95.  Still pricey but not as bad as in Ithaca.  Colorful and delicious!

Then we headed to Tcho!  A chocolate factory located on one of the piers!

They had samples!

And I got a shot of chocolate.  Oh my goodness!  This was heaven in my mouth! So rich, so good!  This was the perfect amount!  Emily got a hot chocolate which was also delicious and perfect on this chilly day!

The rest of the afternoon was spent perusing stores throughout the city.  Randomly, we ran into my friend Alex at Anthropologie who was shopping with his girlfriend.  It was so nice to see him! He’s a superstar living in the city now in a sweet apartment and working for Yelp!

Then after many hours of dragging the lovely fella to store after store, we met up with Emily’s fella, Joss, and headed to dinner.  We went to Puerto Alegre a Mexican restaurant in the Mission.  Oh so good as well!  I had one enchilada!  Sadly no pictures as it was really dark in there.

I had a fun food filled day with friends!  I hope your day was fantastic too!

Have a great night!

Sweet Corn Tamales

Do you ever eat something and then it’s not as delicious as you remember it being?

That happened to me today.  I heated up a sweet corn tamale (because we always have a ton of Guatemalan food in the freezer, my mother is great at defrosting…).

Freezer Drawer full of tortillas and tamales

I was pretty excited to see some sweet corn tamales in the freezer!

Sadly, it wasn’t very delicious!  Oh well!

I’m off to meet up with some friends then start planning New Years Eve appetizers and reading the next Sookie Stackhouse book!  (I always fly through these books!  I liked book 7!)

Any ideas for good party appetizers??

Have a great day!

Lunch & The Biggest Gift Basket in the History of Mankind

As promised, I lounged around all morning.  Around 12:30, I started getting hungry and started formulating a wonderful creation in my head.  I really wanted vegetables so the star of my lunch was broccoli!

I started with some steamed broccoli and plain quinoa

Then I topped it with black beans and a dollop of sour cream.  Sorry about the bean overload on this blog but…

This was DIVINE! As I was eating the last bite I thought some hot sauce would have made this even better.  Oh well, next time!

Dessert came in the form of this gift basket. Before going to work my dad broke open this puppy…

I ate the whole thing!

Just kidding!  I made some tea (Peet’s Winter Solstice Tea!! Sooooo good!)

and enjoyed a few Godiva Dark Chocolate covered pretzels.  Yum!!

Luckily a lot of the things in the basket don’t look that good.  But these pretzels are pretty delicious!  Back to my book and maybe some Food Network (I ❤ Giada and Ina!).

Tonight I’m making another recipe for my December Recipe Challenge!  Have a great afternoon!

Catching Up

Hey all!  I hope you’re all doing well!  I’m home and it’s 73 degrees out!  Yesterday when I got home I was so tired!  So I was in bed by 9:30pm!  But before I jumped into bed, I managed to consumer this:

Guatemalan sweet bread.  My house generally has two things: some sort of Guatemalan bread and a ton of bananas.

Case in point… Yes, we are half monkey…

This morning I was up by 6:00am (time change and early to bed did it I guess).  I lounged around (aka watched trash TV like The Sex and the City E! True Hollywood Story) and by the time everyone left for work, I took over the living room and did Jillian Michael’s 30 Day Shred!  It was intense!  I’m going to try to do it 4-5 times a week the whole time I’m home.  Anyone else want to try this with me?

Then I took a shower and made a tasty lunch! Sandwich and Salad:

1 Boca Burger, half on the sandwich and half on the salad.  The sandwich has about a tablespoon of hummus as my condiment, a bunch of spinach and few tomato slices.

My salad had romaine, tomato, half a boca burger and a bit of BBQ sauce as dressing.

Yum!

Now I’m off to get ready for my super secret event/post that is taking place tomorrow night!  Here’s a hint:

Have a great day!

Knock Off Moosewood Dressing

Remember when I went to Moosewood and fell in love with the lemon-tahini dressing??  Well I decided to recreate it today.

After a trip to the Salvation Army all the way in Cortland (because the Ithaca one simply would not do) to shop for our ugly sweater/Liz’s B-Day party (My sweater is fantastic! I can’t wait to show you all!), we stopped by Ludgate Farms a local farm/store.  I bought a lovely Fingerlakes Salad bouquet!

I ran home and started making my salad with: Fingerlake Lettuce, Carrots, and left over lentil burgers chopped into pieces.  Then I added my knock off Moosewood Lemon Tahini dressing:

Knock Off Moosewood Lemon Tahini Dressing:

1/2 cup tahini
juice of 1 lemon
1/4 tsp cumin
few shakes for cayenne
salt and pepper
enough water to make it the right consistency

These are all estimate measurements as I started with a certain amount and added more as needed.  So if you try it making it you’ll have to try it occassionally and add more or less until you get it to be fantastic!

This made kind of a lot of dressing, so it’ll probably last a long time.  But the final product was pretty tasty!

Now off to write my statistics paper and work on my fitness (Fergie anyone?)

Fake It Til You Make It

I have two fakers here today and both are good for the environment and my tummy!

Faker #1: Chicken Parmesan for Lunch

1 Morningstar Chicken Patty, some pasta sauce, and mozzarella cheese.  Faux-Chicken Parmesan!  Delicous and meat-free!  I love being home for lunch and making more exciting meals, not that Cliff bars and frozen vegetables aren’t great but I much prefer an exciting lunch.  Do you prefer quick, light lunches? or elaborate lunches?

Faker #2: Paper Cup

It’s not paper!  It’s a ceramic reusable travel mug!  Kind of fun and environmentally friendly, right!?!

Speaking of paper… My paper is almost done!  I’m putting the finishing touches on my bibliography!  Thank goodness!!

HAPPY FRIDAY!!

Happy December!

Can you believe it’s already December 1st!?!  Where did time go?!?

It’s already the last week of classes, which means I have a 6368299490063357100 million things due in the next two weeks.

I woke up this morning, wrote a bit more of my paper and flat out didn’t feel like making anything.  So for breakfast I had a DELICIOUS Green Monster.

I finally decided I should probably pack a lunch, being that it’s a long day (but the second to last long day!!!)

I took the lazy route…  Kind of boring so dinner needs to be AMAZING! and  cooked by the lovely fella.

Today the December Recipe Challenge starts!  In case you missed it, you can read about it here!  I hope you’ll all join me!

Have a great day!!

Quick, Healthy and Delicious

I came home from the gym today and for some reason wasn’t hungry at all.  After almost two hours, I decided I should probably eat something even though I wasn’t too hungry.  Do you ever have those days where you’re just not really hungry?? I wish they would happen more often.

I looked around the kitchen for what to make and the lovely fella suggested I make a wrap.

So I spread some greek yogurt on a wrap, topped it with a layer of spinach, artichoke hearts, mustard and a Morningstar Tomato Basil Pizza Burger.

Then I wrapped it up and enjoyed!  It was DELICIOUS and literally took 3 minutes to make (and probably just as much time to eat).  I’m seriously obsessed with Morningstar Farms Veggie Patties.  I should be their spokes person.  I feel like I rep for them all the time!

In other news… one massive jar of artichokes down, one more to go.  I give in another 48 hours.

Here’s a little Food for Thought:

My friend sent me this article called “College’s too-fat-to-graduate Rule Under Fire

Students at Lincoln University with a body mass index of 30 or above, reflective of obesity, must take a fitness course that meets three hours per week. Those who are assigned to the class but do not complete it cannot graduate.

Is this fair?  Is this discrimination?  What are your thoughts?

Vegan For A Day

After a little bit of thought, I decided to jump on the bandwagon and do the vegan for a day challenge.  At first I was a bit apprehensive because well, I’m a planner… (not just a city planner) but I like to make sure I’m fully prepared for this.  The thought that I wasn’t prepared for a day full of vegan meals made me uneasy.  However, after some thought, I realized that going at it unprepared could make the challenge more fun.

That being said, Breakfast was a DELICIOUS Green Monster.

My green monster contains: 2 handfuls of spinach, 1/2 a frozen banana, about 5 frozen strawberries, 1 tbsp of almond butter, and some water. Some was enjoyed at home while writing this post, the rest will be enjoyed in class in my travel mug 🙂

For lunch, I’m packing some garbanzo beans and vegetables with Wegman’s Asian Style BBQ Sauce.

I was looking at the ingredients then realized it told me it was vegan right on the side of the container! I love these labels that Wegman’s puts on it’s products.

Then while making lunch there was a slight disaster with my frozen vegetables

Spilled all over the counter!  Yes, my vegan meal will be eaten out of a cottage cheese container.  I’m a ridiculously broke grad student environmentally conscious and recycling plastic containers…

Have a fantastic day!
